Most people have never had to file an insurance claim, and the process can be overwhelming. Here are some things to keep in mind in the days after a storm.
File fast.
Don’t wait to file your claim. As soon as you have your documentation in order (or even before, as you might not know exactly what your insurer requires), go ahead and make the call to get the process started. Being the early bird is definitely better when it comes to getting your money, recovering your loss and fixing the damage to your home.
Take lots of pictures.
Our new phones make this part easy. Take multiple photos, and even videos, of the damage or loss to your property. Tip: If you’re reading this before a storm, snap pictures or a video tour of your home that show your living space and belongings before the hurricane.
Know what’s covered.
It’s a good idea to review your policy and know exactly what is and what isn’t covered by your homeowner’s insurance. This way, you’ll be prepared for any out-of-pocket expenses in the aftermath.
Start a Claim Journal
Keep track of dates and conversations in one place by starting a claim journal. Include important details like who you talked to and what was discussed, since you’ll likely be having many back-and-forth conversations with adjusters and other representatives. This can help you stay on top of the claims process and know when it’s time to follow up.

If it’s an option, sign up for text or email alerts. Many companies will let you know when your claim is filed, being processed, and even when your payment has been sent.
